This day I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses
against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now
choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the Lord your
God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him. For the Lord is
your life, and he will give you
many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
- Deuteronomy 30:19-20
This verse was brought to my attention
last week. How incredible is it that we
have a choice? Some people may look at the choice we are given and think that
it’s crazy - choose life or death?
Seriously
though, how many choices do you make every day? What time to get up, what to
wear, what to have for breakfast.
Hundreds of
thousands of choices are placed before us every single day.
Some choices are
a matter of life or death, band aid on a paper cut or call 911 at the signs of
a heart attack!
So when God’s
word tells us to choose life, it should be an easy choice, right? I mean if we
are given the option of a life filled with blessings or a death filled with
curses, I am thinking that we will gravitate toward choosing life with much
enthusiasm!
The command: “Choose
life” is more than a decision to keep on breathing. God’s command to choose
life involves loving God. Not the grade school valentines kind of love;
nor the infatuation or selfish kind of love that says, “I love you because you
make me feel so good!” Rather, it is the Godly marriage kind of love – exclusive,
whole-hearted love,
Choosing life means to walk in God’s ways –
At the very beginning of time, Adam and Eve had a choice – obey God or do what
they wanted. To obey God meant life and perfection / to choose their own way
meant rebellion, death and curses; and we know what happened – they did it
their way and sin entered the world.
Choosing life
means to keep God’s commandments; but we make loopholes and excuses
as we rebelliously do it our way!”
We need to
stop!
Stop making
excuses
Stop choosing
the way of death
Stop doing it
our way!
To choose life,
we MUST have a change of heart!
And that change
can ONLY come through faith in Jesus,
Choosing life
by living by God’s commands, daily turn away from our sinful self and in true
repentance turn back to Jesus.
We can choose life.
