beatitude attitude

Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

- Matthew 5:3-12

You might recognize this as being the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus listed the blessings that the Father would bestow upon us.

The Beatitudes.

The definition of “attitude” is “a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior”.

Reflected in a person’s behavior.

Take the words “poor in spirit”, it doesn’t mean lacking in spirit or even poverty as one might think, but instead Jesus is telling us to be humble in our spirits, realizing that we need God.

How many of us are ready to fully admit that?

What if we adjusted our attitudes to have a beatitude attitude?

What if we come before God, humble, mourning, meek, hungry and thirsty for His word, merciful to others, pure in out hearts, peaceful instead of argumentative, and yes, even persecuted for what we believe?

We will be lead to the kingdom of Heaven, were we will find comfort, fulfillment, mercy, we are His children and we will see Him in the kingdom.

I’ve often noticed that if I choose to find happiness, love and peace instead of dwelling in sorrow, hate and anger my attitude toward everything is better.

And my attitude is reflected on those around me.

Who wants to be around the person that is always cranky?

Check your attitude this morning, is it a beatitude attitude?
