all the words

Words from a wise person’s mouth are beneficial, but fools are devoured by their own lips.

- Ecclesiastes 10:12 (CEB)

Again, I pulled a new translation, the Common English Bible this time.

This English translation is intended to be at a comfortable reading level for the majority of English readers published in 2011.

The New King James Version reads The words of a wise man’s mouth are gracious, but the lips of a fool shall swallow him up.

That can be hard to understand, which is why I like all the extra translations.
We see this in everyday life – we hear someone speaking and we know they are so full of silliness we can’t help but roll our eyes, not believing a word that comes out of their mouths.
Yet we have others that as soon as they utter one word we listen, because their words speak volumes, and we want to glean every bit of advice we can from them.
Years ago (in the 1970’s) there was a commercial that said “when E.F. Hutton talks, people listen”.
E.F. Hutton was a Financial Advisement firm, so the idea that their advice was so good you want to take notice was a good thought to have.

I feel like this still holds true fifty years later, when someone with wisdom is speaking ya’ll better listen!
But watch out for those foolish folks whose words are hard to believe.
If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
