a message

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

- Romans 10:17 (NKJV)

Have you ever heard of an earworm?
It is a phrase from over a hundred years ago to describe the experience of a song stuck in the brain, you all have had it at some point.
It could be a commercial or a song from your youth, but once you hear it, you are stuck with it for hours, sometimes days!
Sometimes they are annoying, but honestly, that is what the marketing people want.
They work tirelessly to create a conglomerate of words or phrases that will stick in your mind and subliminally encourage you to do something.
When you hear “Gimme a break, gimme a break, break me off a piece of that KitKat bar”, the Hershey Company wants you to go buy this product to ease your hunger.
Or “the best part of waking up, is Folgers in your cup”, the J.M. Smucker Company would like you to be thirsty (or sleepy) and have a desire for coffee.
Now that we are all hungry and thirsty, let’s look at the Bible verse.
If you are human (and I am assuming that you are), you need to hear things seven times to take action – it’s an old marketing saying, that if you want people to buy something, they have to hear about it seven times.
How often have I said that if something is repeated in the Bible, it must be something that God wants us to hear?

Look at the Message translation of this verse:

But how can people call for help if they don’t know who to trust? And how can they know who to trust if they haven’t heard of the One who can be trusted? And how can they hear if nobody tells them? And how is anyone going to tell them, unless someone is sent to do it? That’s why Scripture exclaims, A sight to take your breath away! Grand processions of people telling all the good things of God! But not everybody is ready for this, ready to see and hear and act. Isaiah asked what we all ask at one time or another: “Does anyone care, God? Is anyone listening and believing a word of it?” The point is: Before you trust, you have to listen. But unless Christ’s Word is preached, there’s nothing to listen to. (MSG)

As your faith grows, you must nurture it, hear it, read it, share it, live it, and experience it.

If we don’t know who to trust and we never hear about God, we will never learn.

This is why it is important to study God’s word over and over, to go to church, to Bible study, to be with like-minded people, followers of Christ.

Hearing the word of God is nothing new, but you might learn something new if you listen.
