it has to stop

Let those who are evil stop doing evil things. And let them quit thinking evil thoughts. Let them turn to the Lord. The Lord will show them His tender love. Let them turn to our God. He is always ready to forgive.

- Isaiah 55:7 (NIRV)

My daily routine includes listening to my local news station while I am getting ready for work, but lately it has been hard to hear the stories that are being covered.
There is so much evil in the world.
The other day I was listening to two recent events, and I just shook my head in disbelief.
What is wrong with people??
The evil must stop.
Doing evil, thinking evil, it all must stop.
Please encourage people to turn to God.
Please stop the violence and the protests and lean on God.
This is sheer madness, this world we are living in.
People, please turn to our God.

did you hear it?

Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.

- Romans 10:17 (NIV)

Why do we read the Bible and go to church?

Do we really need to hear this stuff over and over?

Yes, yes, we do.

If you are human (and I am assuming that you are), you need to hear things seven times to take action – it’s an old marketing saying, that if you want people to buy something, they have to hear about it seven times.

I’ll go with seven because it is mentioned several times in the Bible, so just like everything else, when something is repeated, it’s time to pay attention!
Listen to the Message version of this set of verses:

But how can people call for help if they don’t know who to trust? And how can they know who to trust if they haven’t heard of the One who can be trusted? And how can they hear if nobody tells them? And how is anyone going to tell them, unless someone is sent to do it? That’s why Scripture exclaims, A sight to take your breath away! Grand processions of people telling all the good things of God! But not everybody is ready for this, ready to see and hear and act. Isaiah asked what we all ask at one time or another: “Does anyone care, God? Is anyone listening and believing a word of it?” The point is: Before you trust, you have to listen. But unless Christ’s Word is preached, there’s nothing to listen to. (MSG)

As your faith grows, you must nurture it, hear it, read it, share it, live it, and experience it.
If we don’t know who to trust and we never hear about God, we will never learn.

Go pick up your Bible and read.

You might learn something new.

not in darkness

He has saved us from the kingdom of darkness. He has brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves. Because of what the Son has done, we have been set free. Because of Him, all our sins have been forgiven.

- Colossians 1:13-14 (NIRV)

Darkness can be defined as many things, the two most familiar are the partial or total absence of light and wickedness or evil, neither of these are places that we want to be!

When we walk in the partial or total absence of light, we can trip and fall or run into something that will cause us harm.
When we are surrounded by wickedness or evil, we can make very poor choices that will also cause us harm.
We don’t have to live in either kind of darkness, we can live in the light that is Christ Jesus.

No matter what we have going on around us, the power of Jesus will set us free, we are washed of our sin because God loves us that much.
That is a whole lot!
There are many times that we might feel unworthy or unlovable, but it is simply not true, we are loved, we are loved beyond measure.
Because of Him we are forgiven and free.

the guardian

But the Lord is faithful, who will establish you and guard you from the evil one.

- 2 Thessalonians 3:3 (NKJV)

Have you every seen a momma animal protecting their babies?
Momma bears are notorious for putting their own lives on the line to protect their cubs.
There is a lot of evil in this world, especially today we can see evil everywhere.
When we rely on the Lord for our strength, He will help us fight the demons that want to take everything from us.
God will build us up and give us power over evil.
All we have to do is believe that He can.
It’s a scary world out there, don’t go without your guardian.

to tell the truth

God is always true even if every man lies. The Holy Writings say, “Speak the truth and you will not be proven guilty.

- Romans 3:4 (NLV)

When someone tells one lie, they end up having to tell another and another to cover up the original lie, and soon they believe their initial lie to be the truth.
These people lie so often that it comes easily to them, easier than telling the truth, lying is a habit.
Lying becomes compulsive, they don’t even have to think about it to lie.

They basically get a “high” from telling lies and getting away with it, and they feel no remorse when caught in their lies.

Mark Twain said, “If you tell the truth, you don’t have to remember anything”, telling the truth is a lot less stressful than having to remember the lies you told.
The Bible says that we should always tell the truth, because in the truth we will be set free.

There are over one hundred verses in the Bible about why truth is the way.
If we live our lives in truth, we have nothing to feel guilty about, so we can’t be proven guilty.

come to my rescue

See, God has come to rescue me; I will trust in Him and not be afraid, For the Eternal, indeed, the Eternal is my strength and my song. My very own God has rescued me.

- Isaiah 12:2 (VOICE)

I don’t even know where to begin today.
Anyone that has read my “daily bread” for a while knows that I write from my heart.
In my writing I shamelessly expose who I am, the things I stand for and what I believe.
I don’t gloss over the truth; I don’t try and hide the hurt.
There are days I feel silly, and it shows in my writing.
Yet other times the pain is overwhelming, and I need someone to tell me that everything will be ok.
There are days that I need to be rescued.
In 2018 Lauren Daigle released the song “Rescue”, the lyrics say so much:
You are not hidden

There's never been a moment

You were forgotten

You are not hopeless

Though you have been broken

Your innocence stolen

I hear you whisper underneath your breath

I hear your SOS, your SOS

I will send out an army to find you

In the middle of the darkest night

It's true, I will rescue you

There is no distance

That cannot be covered

Over and over

You're not defenseless

I'll be your shelter

I'll be your armor

I hear you whisper underneath your breath

I hear your SOS, your SOS

I will send out an army to find you

In the middle of the darkest night

It's true, I will rescue you

I will never stop marching to reach you

In the middle of the hardest fight

It's true, I will rescue you
We can’t hide from God, nor does He ignore us.

In our desperation He is there, He will never stop fighting for us (that is another song though)
There is a lot of hurt in the world, but we don’t have to give in to the pain, we have someone that will rescue us.
We all have days where we need to be rescued.

Don’t go alone, call me, I will walk with you.

just for you

I pray that God, the source of hope, will fill you completely with joy and peace because you trust in him. Then you will overflow with confident hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.

- Romans 15:13 (NLT)

Hope, joy, and peace.

Sometimes it feels like these things are unobtainable.

Hope is the confident expectation that God has promised us strength in Him, that if we are faithful, He will provide for our needs.

Hope fills us excitement, knowing there is a future for us.

I can honestly say that I haven’t always been filled with hope, joy, and peace, there has been a lot of dark times that lingered for years.
Hope got me through, believing in the Father and believing that good things would come, even when I couldn’t see the light because of the darkness.

We all have rough times that we face, we all feel overwhelmed at the depth of despair we are experiencing in the moment.
But that is all it is, a moment.
Unfortunately, that moment may last for years, but you will overcome.
Casting Crowns has a song called “Prayer For A Friend”, I cried my eyes out the first time I heard it:
Lord, I lift my friend to You, I've done all that I know to do

I lift my friend to You

Complicated circumstances have clouded his view

Lord, I lift my friend up to You

I fear that I won't have the words that he needs to hear

I pray for Your wisdom, oh God, and a heart that's sincere

Lord, I lift my friend up to You

Lord, I lift my friend to You

My best friend in the world, I know he means much more to You

I want so much to help him, but this is something he has to do

And Lord, I lift my friend up to You

'Cause there's a way that seems so right to him

But You know where that leads

He's becoming a puppet of the world, too blind to see the strings

Lord, I lift my friend up to You

My friend up to You

Lord, I lift my friend to You, I've done all that I know to do

I lift my friend to You
This is my prayer for you, that you will be able to seek hope, joy, and peace in the Father.
Trust Him.

give it up

Then Jesus said to them all, “If anyone wants to follow Me, he must give up himself and his own desires. He must take up his cross everyday and follow Me. If anyone wants to keep his own life safe, he must lose it. If anyone gives up his life because of Me, he will save it.

- Luke 9:23-24 (NLV)

This one is hard, ya’all.

Jesus told more than one person that they had to give up everything and follow Him.
Sell everything they owned and give the money to charity.

Leave the family business and travel with Him.

Walk away from their lives and families to join the crowds that gathered to listen to Him everywhere He went.
Do you think you could do that, if Jesus walked up to you today, took your hand and said, “let’s go”, would you be able to walk away from your job, your family, every creature comfort you have provided for yourself over the years?
Yet this is what we are asked to do.
Give up everything.
Come to terms with the vulnerable and weak parts of ourselves.
Admitting the embarrassment and acknowledging the hurt.
Jesus took His cross humbly, putting God’s will above Himself.
We are asked to be obedient to Him.
And it is hard, but the bottom line is that eternal life is found in Him.

something for nothing

Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, But he who gathers by labor will increase.

- Proverbs 13:11 (NKJV)

Get rich quick schemes have been around for decades.
Pyramid (or Ponzi, named after the most notorious scheme in the 1920’s) schemes have been around since 1860’s, believe it or not and sadly they are still gong strong.

Listen, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
If you are trying to sell a couch on Facebook Marketplace for $100 and someone offers to send you a check for $3,000 telling you to cash it and keep enough to cover the cost of the couch plus shipping and send them a money order for the balance (like $2500). The check they sent you is bogus, but it takes a couple of days to be denied by the bank, while the money order you sent them is completely real, and you're out $2500.

Scammers are everywhere, it feels like no one is safe.
If you click a link suddenly these people have access to your cell phone, your computer your bank accounts, all the stuff – all the stuff.

There is no legitimate way to earn money without effort, and short-lived success is just that – short lived.
Work hard for your money and when you earn it, spend wisely, and save accordingly.
Sure, we all want what everyone else has, but I promise we appreciate it more when we acquire our wealth honestly.

love them anyway

“Father, forgive these people,” Jesus said, “for they don’t know what they are doing.” And the soldiers gambled for his clothing, throwing dice for each piece.

- Luke 23:34 (TLB)

Some people are just hard to love.

Love them anyway.
There are people out there that will truly test your patience.

Love them anyway.
I know 1000% that I have not always been kind and loveable to everyone I meet.

God loves me anyway.
Jesus was dying on the cross, He was flogged, taunted, and sentenced to death from the very crowd that welcomed Him just 5 days earlier.
Yet, He loved them anyway.
He went to the Father on their behalf, asking for their forgiveness.

He does the same thing for us, regardless of our sin, He loves us, and He died for our forgiveness.
Maybe I don’t agree with your political opinions.

Perhaps we don’t share the same taste in music.
It could be that you don’t like cats.
But I can still love you.
I don’t even have to associate with you on a regular basis, yet I can still love you.

standing by

But the Lord your God you shall fear; and He will deliver you from the hand of all your enemies.

- 2 Kings 17:39 (NKJV)

I love the verses that talk about Jesus coming back.
I gather comfort knowing that some day He will bring all His followers home.

There is an old school song I’d like to reference from Rich Mullins called My Deliverer:
Joseph took his wife and her child and they went to Africa

To escape the rage of a deadly king

There along the banks of the Nile, Jesus listened to the song

That the captive children used to sing

They were singin'

My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by

My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by

Through a dry and thirsty land, water from the Kenyon heights

Pours itself out of Lake Sangra's broken heart

There in the Sahara winds Jesus heard the whole world cry

For the healing that would flow from His own scars

The world was singing

My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by

My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by

He will never break His promise, He has written it upon the sky

My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by

I will never doubt His promise though I doubt my heart, I doubt my eyes

My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by

He will never break His promise though the stars should break faith with the sky

My Deliverer is coming, my Deliverer is standing by

...

From the earliest of times there were prophecies that we would be delivered, and then Jesus came.
And then Jesus died.
But He will come back, He promised and those promises He made will not get broken.

My deliverer IS coming, He IS standing by.

under fire

Blessed is the person who keeps on going when times are hard. After they have come through hard times, this person will receive a crown. The crown is life itself. The Lord has promised it to those who love him.

- James 1:12 (NIRV)

So many trials!

There are days when I feel like I am personally under fire, and it comes from all directions.
Days when I just want to crawl into a hole and shut out the whole world.
But I can’t do that, and neither should you.

Sometimes it feels like the controversy will never stop, but we must remember that there is a reward for those who are willing to stay on the path until the end.

Our lives can be turned upside down in the blink of an eye and suddenly, we are missing huge parts of us.

The way that we live should draw attention to God, no matter what trials we are facing because people notice us, how we react to tragedy and joy, and when they notice us, they notice God.

When we face adversity, we don’t need to be afraid because God has a crown for those who stay true to what they believe.

I try to live every day, so people see Him in me.

I hope you do as well.

this is us

Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer.

- Ecclesiastes 4:9-12a (NLT)

Twenty-six years ago, I stood in front of a church full of people and vowed to love only my husband for the rest of my life.
And oh, what a life it has been.
We have lived in three states, raised three children, had boats, motorcycles and an RV and countless adventures, each one better than the last.
It might sound cheesy, but I would do it all over again, I would not want to do life without my wonderful husband.
Randy has been my biggest cheerleader, and I have watched him succeed in things he didn’t think he would do.
He has picked me up when I have failed, I have not ever been alone with him.
We have curled up under many blankets when I have been cold and together, we stay warm.
We have been attacked by litters of kittens and worn our scars proudly as we watched the now docile kittens go to their forever homes.
We have conquered a lot, we have seen evil things, but stood up to those things together.
He and his family showed me that there is strength in numbers.
This is us, brought together not by circumstance, but by a greater plan of an amazing Father.
He sure knew what He was doing when He made you for me.
Happy anniversary, my love.

she gave this to me

Her children stand up and call her blessed. Her husband also rises up, and he praises her.

- Proverbs 31:28 (NIRV)

Today is a very special day.
You see on this day, God sent an amazing woman to live on Earth, her name is Jan, and she is my mother-in-law.
I have to say that my mother-in-law is phenomenal, she raised my husband to be the loving and nurturing man that he is, and she has molded me into a better woman with her teachings.
My mother-in-law is everything that I am not, she is patient and kind and looks out for everyone.
She is an awesome cook and has taught me lots of kitchen shortcuts and super yummy recipes.
There is an old poem/song, I believe the original was from 1915 and it is titled simply “Mother”.
M Is for the Many things she gave me,

O Means only that she’s growing Old.

T Is for the Tears she shed to save me,

H Is for her Heart of purest gold.

E Is for her Eyes with love light shining,

R Means Right and Right she’ll always be.

Put them all together, They spell MOTHER.

A word that means the world to me.

If I had to spend the rest of my life with only one person and it could not be my husband, I would choose my mother-in-law.
Happy birthday, Mom, I love you.

on the right

The Son is the shining brightness of God’s glory. He is the exact likeness of God’s being. He uses His powerful word to hold all things together. He provided the way for people to be made pure from sin. Then He sat down at the right hand of the King, the Majesty in heaven.

- Hebrews 1:3 (NIRV)

Have you ever done a tour of any kind where the tour guide says something like “if you look to the left, you will see…”?
Or been on a road trip and said to the people in the vehicle “hey, look over there!”?
There is so much to see when you look around, but sometimes we do need a tour guide to point things out to us.

Imagine when we get to Heaven, that we might get a tour.
That an angel of the Lord will lead us past the great prophets and people we’ve spent our lives reading about in the Bible.
“On the left you will see Moses, he is telling the children of the time he led God’s people out of Egypt.”, and even though the children know the story by heart, their attention is fully on Moses, hearing his story.
“On the right you will see Paul, he is still preaching the good news of our Savior” and you see a crowd around him, listening intently to make sure they don’t miss a word.
As you walk down the streets paved of gold, you see all the greats of this world, Martin Luther, John Wesley, John Calvin, John Smyth, William White, John Sinclair.
Moving further along you see your own ancestors, and all are welcoming you with warm smiles.

Then, suddenly, up ahead you see Him, and the tour guide will say “if you look to the right next to the throne, your Savior, Jesus.”

Jesus sees you in the crowd and He stands, opens His arms for you to run to Him.

He really is there, seated at the right hand of the Father, just like we have been told our whole lives.

And we get to run to Him.

it is finished

After Jesus drank He said, “It is finished.” Then He bowed His head and died.

- John 19:30 (NIRV)

It’s Good Friday.

Often people ask why it is called “good” because it was a terrible day when Jesus died on that cross.
But it is good because following the Friday that Jesus did, was the resurrection and His victory over sin and death.
I have a lot of favorite songs as anyone who has read my “daily bread” for any length of time knows, but today I am reminded of the song “It Is Finished” by Passion Conferences.
The cross is my beginning

The line drawn in the sand

The end of all my striving

Now I am born again

There, Jesus was forsaken

So I will never be

His grace is my salvation

The gift of God, the work of Calvary

It is done, it is finished

Christ has won, He is risen

Grace is here

Love has triumphed over death forever

The cross needs no addition

His mercy is complete

His love is not in question

The Son of God has spoken over me

. . .

Strongholds bowing to the Savior

Resurrection power over every circumstance

His word stands final and forever

It will not be shaken, He alone has won it all

. . .
It is done, it is finished

Mercy won, I'm forgiven

Sing His name, He is worthy of our praise, Jesus

. . .
Mercy won.
What powerful words.
On Good Friday, there is a somber mood, a darkness overcoming us.
But in three days we celebrate the Risen Christ, our King.
Happy Easter.

symbols

While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then He took a cup, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins. I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father’s kingdom.”

- Matthew 26:26-29 (NIV)

Did you know that in the early days of the church, Christ followers were accused of cannibalism because non-believers heard that they were actually eating a body and drinking blood?

It’s rather twisted if you think about it, the bread and the wine are merely symbols.
We continue to use symbols as a point of recognition for us.
We know what model the car in front of us is by the symbol on the back.
Everyone is familiar with the red circle with a slash through it as the general prohibition sign or the “no symbol”.
A piece of fruit with a bite out of it tells everyone you are using an iPhone or a Mac computer.
A wedding ring is a symbol of a vow we make to our spouse.

A cross is a symbol of what Jesus did for you.

I wear my wedding ring as a symbol to others that I am married.
I have lots of cross necklaces that are a symbol of my faith.

We even wear badges or name tags as symbols of our employment or position.

Today is the day in the church calendar in which we observe that Jesus had His last meal with His disciples, and He gave us these symbols to remember Him.
Do you remember Him?

thirty pieces of silver

Then one of the Twelve—the one called Judas Iscariot—went to the chief priests and asked, “What are you willing to give me if I deliver him over to you?” So they counted out for him thirty pieces of silver. From then on Judas watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

- Matthew 26:14-16 (NIV)

Thirty pieces of silver.

The U.S. Mint stopped making quarters from silver in 1965, and according to the NGC Price Guide, as of March 2023, a Washington quarter from 1964 in circulated condition is worth between $4.75 and $7.25.
So here I am doing math, which the people that know me know I try to not do math, but if we take the high end of $7.25 times 30, that is about $217.50 (if I’m wrong, I warned you, I don’t do math!)
Would you sell out your best friend for two hundred dollars?
I hope that everyone answered that question with a resounding “No!” .

But Judas did.
Not only did Judas betray Jesus for that bag of silver, he went to the priests and offered to do it!
Wow, with friends like that we don’t need enemies!
Jesus was fully aware that this would happen, just as He was aware that Peter would deny Him three times.
I don’t think I would have hung around with that crowd, since they were so eager to turn their backs on their friend!
Obviously, it is not quite the extreme, but how many times have you turned your back on a friend?
Are you still friends?
Jesus forgave His friends, even knowing that their betrayal would lead to His death.
Maybe it’s time to ask forgiveness for turning your back on a friend.
Maybe it’s time to forgive the friend that turned their back on you.
I’m guessing that the lives of these people are worth more than $217.50.

don’t be judgey

But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written: “As I live, says the Lord, every knee shall bow to Me, and every tongue shall confess to God.” So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.

- Romans 14:10-12 (NKJV)

It’s probably wildly inappropriate but when I think about judging others, I can’t help thinking of the first few lines of the 1992 rap song “Baby Got Back”.
I’m not quoting it here so don’t wait for it.
I’m not sure if the girls in the song were jealous or if they were making fun of the other girl, but either way showing contempt or judgment of someone else is a bad idea.
We need to look at our own lives and actions before we start critiquing others.
Spend time examining our life to see what will pass God’s judgment on that final day.

We know what is good and bad, we know how to measure our actions to determine if they are productive or not.

Just out of curiosity, would your day change if you knew that you would be giving an account to God at the end of the day?

Would that knowledge change the way you work or spend time with your family?

Remember that we live for an audience of One, and God’s opinion is the only one that ultimately matters in the end.

anyway

Now Jesus was going up to Jerusalem. On the way, he took the Twelve aside and said to them, “We are going up to Jerusalem, and the Son of Man will be delivered over to the chief priests and the teachers of the law. They will condemn him to death and will hand him over to the Gentiles to be mocked and flogged and crucified. On the third day he will be raised to life!”

- Matthew 20:17-19 (NIV)

Yesterday we observed Palm Sunday.
The Bible tells us that on this day, Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey and the townspeople threw their cloaks and palm branches on the road in front of Him shouting “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!”
It was a huge celebration, and many were glad to see Him pass through the city gates.
But their joy would be short-lived, as this same group of people that welcomed Him in just a few days would tell Pontius Pilate that they wanted Him crucified.
Jesus knew He was about to experience some of the most excruciating pain anyone could endure, yet He followed the plan anyway.

I don’t know about you, but I try to avoid situations that are going to cause me pain.

Jesus knew what the outcome would be, nevertheless He went to Jerusalem anyway.

How often do we think we know what the outcome of our actions will be?

Jesus knew He would soon die, still He got on that donkey and rode into town.

If we could see what our future holds, would we follow the path laid out for us, or would we turn and run, try to hide from the fate that awaits us.
Jesus knew, and just the same, He did what was expected of Him.

How sad is it that we wouldn’t do the same for Him?
The request is simple, follow Him.
Let’s do it.
