For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.
Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced
themselves with many griefs.
– 1 Timothy 6:10
Oh I have this conversation all. the. time.
Someone I know will get snarky and put a meme on facebook about
how if money is the root of all evil, why do churches ask for it?
Read. The. Verse.
Notice that it is the love of money, not money, which is the
root of all kinds of evil.
The term “wandering from the faith” is insightful, for the love
of money is a subtle intoxicant that is rarely identified.
So many times we have to keep up with the Joneses and have the
best of everything, but at what cost?
At some point, we wander so far from God to attain these
material things, that it is hard to find our way back.
And we are not any happier with stuff than we were without
stuff.
Movie reference!!! Hello, Madame Blueberry from Veggie Tales,
who was so blue because everyone else had stuff that she didn’t have, and even
when she got the stuff, it did not make her happy.
How many people do you know that buy things that they really can’t
afford, putting themselves in a world of debt, because they think the latest
new thing will make them happy?
You see, the grief that the love of money produces is great, and
our nation is filled with self-inflicted wounds from the siren call of
consumerism.
Think about this the next time you “need” the next great thing.
Have a blessed day!
