a light in the darkness

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

- John 1:4-5

Is darkness the opposite of light? 

Is darkness the absence of light?

Philosophers have gone round and round trying to prove which one is true. 

Here is what I believe.

Jesus is the light of the world. 

And that is all I need to know.
