Do not dwell on the past

This is what the Lord says, "Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland."

—Isaiah 43:16,18-19

The year is gone, finished, past.

We cannot reclaim it or undo it.

We cannot rest on the great distance it has brought us.

If tomorrow dawns, it will be another day, a new opportunity, and the time to show our faith in Jesus as Lord.

Let's journey forward, knowing that God already inhabits the future and promises to provide us refreshment on our journey there.

"Don't be conceited!"

That's a command for someone else, right?

I don't think I've ever met someone who felt he or she was conceited.

Many times when  we're looking for someone with whom we want to associate, we seldom look for someone ignored by the crowd, forgotten by the pretty people, and easily overlooked by others.

We want to "hang around with" those who are important, who are superstars, or at least who carry some clout.

We believe we deserve to be noticed and valued, too.

Oops, guess that's where the commands in this verse come from!

 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment.

—Proverbs 12:19

I can’t tell you how many times that I have told my kids that if they tell me the truth about something they get into less trouble than when I find out they lied.

Sam Rayburn (Speaker of the House from 1940 to 1947, 1949 to 1953, and 1955 to 1961, the longest-serving speaker in American history.) said  "Tell the truth the first time, then you won't have to remember what you said."

Good advice, even for today.

Telling a lie seems gratifying at the time, but it nearly always catches up with us and gives us the added burden of trying to remember what we said and why.

Truth endures; a lie is a momentary illusion that ends up a trap filled with burdens.

Oh and then there is that “The truth will set you free” thing . . .

overcome evil

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

I read somewhere that the number one goal in dealing with difficult people or circumstances is this: Don't become what you hate.

This was not a comment about hating the person, but what it means is that we don't want to become evil, wicked, petty, and sinful in our actions and motivations.

We don't overcome the Devil by underhanded and dishonorable means.

We overcome evil and drive it back into the abyss by doing what is right and filling our hearts and lives with goodness.

There is no greater example of overcoming evil with good than Jesus.

I need more

Life is more than food, and the body more than clothes.

I truly hope that you all had a wonderful Christmas.

In the rush of the holiday season and the grab at getting and giving gifts, it is very important to remember that life is much more than even the most basic things we think we need.

If we lose sight of God, His work and His will in our lives, then what do we have?

Not much and it won't last long!

My prayer for you, and for me, before, during and after this holiday season is that we are reminded of what is most important, most valuable, and most enduring.

Star of wonder

After they had heard the king, they went on their way, and the star they had seen when it rose went ahead of them until it stopped over the place where the child was. When they saw the star, they were overjoyed.

—Matthew 2:9-10

The magi were not Jews.

They were astrologers who appear “out of nowhere” and were aware of the birth of a new king.

Think about it: God led these men to Jesus using skills that were foreign to the Jewish mindset of the time.

As the Jewish high priest was oblivious to God in his midst, three pagans were worshipping the Christ.

From His birth to His death on the cross, Jesus came to earth to bring every people group to Himself.

He is doing the same today, so don’t be surprised if God uses unusual people to get our attention.

His promise

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: "The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel" — which means, "God with us."

—Matthew 1:22-23

God had repeatedly promised it.

Men, women, and angels had long anticipated it.

Now, in Jesus, it happens.

God is with us.

Jesus is Immanuel.

We live on a visited planet, touched by the very presence of God among us.

And it was just as the prophets of old had said.

His mercy

 [Zechariah prophesied concerning John,] "You, my child, will be called a prophet of the Most High; for you will go on before the Lord to prepare the way for him, to give his people the knowledge of salvation through the forgiveness of their sins, because of the tender mercy of our God."

—Luke 1:76-78

Where does salvation come from?

Does it come from our sense that something is desperately wrong and we need to change and make it better?

Does it come from casting things in a more positive light so we don't become discouraged and quit?

Does it come from a lucky break?

Does it come because we are scrupulously righteous and deserve it come our way?

Does it come from rigorously obeying everything in the law?

No!

Salvation and forgiveness come from one source, "the tender mercy of our God."

We are sons and daughters of a King!

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

—Isaiah 9:6

While Jesus is God's Son and Mary's son, according to Isaiah's prophecy, He is also shared with us.

Jesus is the child given to the world so you and I can become God's child.

What greater gift can we have than Jesus, and through Jesus, God as our Father.

Here's your sign

The Lord himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel.

—Isaiah 7:14

God is interested in us personally.

So much so, that He personally gives us this sign.

Because of Matthew's explanation of the meaning of the name Immanuel, we know what that sign was - Jesus coming to live as God with us.

His presence is God's presence.

His life is God's sign.

The miracle of His conception is God's mystery and also His statement of grace for us.

Greater

I tell you that one greater than the temple is here.

When I travel, I love to look at architecture. 

Some cities have the most incredible buildings, fountains, statues and points of interest.

What is the greatest construction project built by human hands?

You know what?

Jesus is greater still!

I love to look at churches, old and new and any religion.

What is the most "holy" place you have been?

Jesus is far holier still!

We went to the ocean earlier this year.

It was incredibly beautiful and peaceful.

What is the most awe-inspiring site you have visited?

Jesus is far more awesome and holy!

I have been to some great concerts in the past few years – I got to see Mercy Me twice!

What is the most inspiring event you have ever attended?

Jesus is far more...

Jesus is the One Who Is Greater!

Nothing else, no one else, can hold a candle to Him.

And He is coming back for us.

But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength, so that through me the message might be fully proclaimed and all the Gentiles might hear it. And I was delivered from the lion’s mouth.

OK, I always say that I choose verses that pop out at me.

Today, I think I need to hear and think on this.

God does not leave us alone when we face overwhelming odds.

Did you know that Paul felt abandoned by others?

But he was not separated from God.

Paul knew that God had a purpose for him that was yet to be fulfilled, so Paul was able to stand strong even in the midst of incredible danger.

Whoa . . .

God has a purpose for ME, and for YOU.

This is the confidence that Paul had, is the knowledge that any man or woman who calls on Jesus should lean on—that God will give you strength, for He has a destiny for you to fulfill.

Oh my goodness. . . 

Let love never leave you.

Wow.

Do you want to have favor and a good name?

Put others around you as top priority and make sure that you are seen as someone who is faithful.

To bind these qualities around your neck is to have them with you always.

It does not matter if you are at work, shopping or at home, you should be the same person, always.

Loving others and being consistent in our work will make one invaluable to any organization or group of friends.

This is actually very challenging, but the reward of favor and a good name is more than worth it.

Refined

But who can endure the day of His coming? Who can stand when He appears? For He will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.

– Malachi 3:2

Song reference!

Refiner’s fire, my heart’s one desire,

Is to be holy, set apart for You, Lord. . .

Refiner’s fire was used to heat metal to the point that all of the impurities would come to the surface.

Launderers would wash clothes with a strong soap, then place the clothing upon a rock and beat them with a stick.

Both are strong images of what happens with God’s judgment and therefore present us with a dilemma—who could stand?

Only one.

Jesus Christ endured God’s judgment at the cross.

He was refined in God’s fire and beaten for our sins so that we could come to God the Father as those who are purified and cleansed.

When I look at my life, I know I need cleansing, how about you?

Love what is good

Love!

It is the season of love, good will toward man, all that!

I see lots of people change at Christmas time. 

They are cheerful, loving and giving, but the other 11 months of the year . . .

Listen, friends, our love cannot be feigned, faked, or fickle!

That means that we abhor things that are evil.

We not only stay away from them, but we disdain them.

At the same time, we commit ourselves to lovingly drawing closer to goodness and righteousness.

In our intentions, there are no shades of gray, only a passionate desire for what is right, good, and holy.

Convenient worship?

Ascribe to the Lord, all you families of nations, ascribe to the Lord glory and strength. Ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the Lord in the splendor of his holiness.

– 1 Chronicles 16:28-29

Worship is not supposed to be marked by convenience.

If anything, it is the inconvenience of gathering that makes worship something outside of our normal routines.

Where else will you gather with other believers, lift your voices in song together, and unite around the gospel, the wine and the bread?

True worship will cost you something; whether that is in time, talent, or treasure.

Breathe

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord. Praise the Lord.

– Psalm 150:6

Worship is the natural state of things.

Every bird’s song is a song of praise.

Every baby’s first breath fills our hearts with joy.

In a sense, every breath that you and I take is a miracle, so don’t miss the moment.

Praise God in all things, because our breath is a gift from God.

Heart full of praise

Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and praise His name.

– Psalm 100:4

This is known as a Psalm of ascents—or a Psalm that is to be sung as you enter the temple.

This song tells us that thanksgiving and praise has little to do with emotions; they are choices that we have to make as we prepare our hearts for worship.

Choices.

We choose to be thankful.

So take a moment now and ask yourself: What can I be thankful for?

How can I praise God’s name today?

Don’t be surprised to see your heart change as you do, because praise and thanksgiving is designed to take our eyes off of ourselves and place them on the One who has the power to change us.

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your request to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

—Philippians 4:6-7

This again?

Oh YES.

God wants to hear our prayers.

But to keep them from becoming too self-focused, God wants us to always remember to give thanks.

It is so easy for us to turn prayer into a request line.

We are the ones who are left bereft when thanksgiving and praise are robbed from our prayers.

Without praise our hearts grow dim because all we think about are problems and prayer becomes a wish list.

Give praise in everything, even if you don’t understand it.

Blessings

He replied, "Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it."

—Luke 11:28

God gave us His word to bless us.

When we obey what He asks of us, we get to walk in that blessing.

On the other hand, as Jesus reminded us at the end of the Sermon on the Mount, when we know the will of God and don't obey it, we are foolish.

I don't know about you, but I prefer to receive a blessing!

Thank God for speaking to us through His word.

We have the Scriptures so we can know His will and walk in His blessing.

Thank God and for speaking to us through His living Word.

He gave us His Son so we can know His heart as we apply it to our lives.

Security

Lord, You alone are my portion and my cup; You make my lot secure.

– Psalm 16:5

This sounds great right? 

But it was actually written in distress. . .

You see David was dealing with many struggles when he wrote this Psalm.

Yet in the midst of great hardship, David acknowledged that God guards those things that David held as valuable: his portion, his cup and his lot.

His portion was the provision that was needed for him to survive.

His cup was the purpose in life that he had (remember Jesus, who spoke to the Father of “taking this cup from him”).

His lot was the inheritance of land that was a major part of preserving Jewish lineage.

When David felt separated from all of these things, he reminded himself that his current situation was not the final word: it was God’s faithfulness that he trusted in during times of trial.

That same faithfulness is available to you and me.

Our God is the same yesterday, today and forever.

Forgive everyone

I have a really big heart, and as crazy as it sounds, my heart is what gets hurt really easily.

I have a tendency to hold a grudge for a long time, especially when I have been hurt badly by someone, whether it was intentional or not.

Therefore this verse to me is one of the most challenging reminders of God's will in Scripture.

I must forgive others!

When I refuse, it cuts me off the stream of forgiveness that God so longs to give to me.

While forgiving others is never easy, God has not only commanded us to do it, He has also given us His Son as an example of forgiveness.

In addition, He has promised to empower us to be able to do His will by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The real issue: Will we let go of our bitterness toward those who have wounded us?

All these people were still living by faith when they died. They did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance. And they admitted that they were aliens and strangers on earth.

—Hebrews 11:13

I'm not good at waiting for much of anything.

This time of year may be the worst, because I am excited for family and friends and events where I get to be with family and friends. :)

God does have a great Gift Day ahead for us.

On that wonderful day, all our waiting will be over and our faith will become sight.

Let's follow the example of these great heroes of faith, and welcome that day from afar, by anticipation, praising God for His victory through Jesus Christ in our lives.

While we wait for God's great victory for us to be fully realized, we also need to know that we are in a battle.

God will win this battle through Jesus Christ - the final outcome is certain - Christ has already won the decisive battle.

However, let's not be fooled; the evil one will do everything he can to deceive all people and confuse the lost.

Let's stick with God's plan — living His truth, listening for His voice in Scripture, and following the lead of His Spirit.

Don't be greedy!

Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.”

– Luke 12:15

I probably should have posted this verse the day before Thanksgiving, as a reminder to those “Black Friday” shoppers . . .

In this story in the book of Luke, Jesus is addressing two brothers who are fighting over their inheritance.

He gives them a strong warning about thinking that their possessions can give their life worth and ultimate value.

So what if you didn’t get a “hatchling” or a Nintendo, “stuff” does not define who you are.

Greed grips our hearts when we place material things (or anything) in the place of God and His ultimate approval and blessings in our life.

We have been given the very best God has to offer in the form of His Son!

—Isaiah 11:9

What a glorious time of blessing when we know God personally.

It will not be just us, but the vast chorus of the faithful will sing a song of joy because they know God.

Let's anticipate that day and join our hearts together in pursuit of God.

Let's not settle for merely a factual knowledge about God, but let's come to really know Him by sharing in His work, by sharing in His character, and seeking His presence in our lives.

I care

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.

—Psalm 34:18

While many of us are richly blessed spiritually and physically, many of God's people face hardship and difficulty.

You may be one of those in difficult circumstances.

Please remember that God has not abandoned you.

Jesus is the great reminder that God cares and involves Himself with the broken, forgotten, and downtrodden.

Please know as well, that lots of people are praying for you today.

Be a blessing

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving.

As we examine our blessings and give thanks to God for His wonderful grace, let's ask why God has blessed us so much.

God's people are blessed to be a blessing.

Let's make sure we are not just recipients of God's blessings.

Let's commit to be conduits of those blessings to others.

If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

– 1 John 1:8-9

The gospel gives us an interesting paradox: to be free from sin we must recognize its grip on our lives.

In other words, sin is a reminder that we need a Savior!

No matter how long one has walked with Christ, we are in constant need of forgiveness.

Yet this confession of sin creates another force — righteousness.

As we look to Christ, His righteousness truly cleanses us.

To live IN Christ is the wisdom of God to keep us in relationship and to guard us from pride.

Mirror, Mirror

All a person’s ways seem pure to them, but motives are weighed by the Lord.

– Proverbs 16:2

Mirror, mirror on the wall, who is the holiest of them all?

One of the metaphors for the Scripture is that of a mirror; when we look at God’s word, we are able to see our reflection more clearly.

But what happens when we stop looking at that mirror?

We forget what we really look like and can even deceive ourselves toward our actions!

Pride, lust, and apathy can feel normal.

Unless we allow the Scripture to expose our ways, we will justify our poor behavior.

We need more than a Bible study, we need our hearts to be transformed by the power of God’s word.

Call out

and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.

Psalm 50:15

This is not the verse that I had planned on using today, but on the way to work this morning, my heart was touched. 

These are sobering times that we live in today. 

People close to me have lost jobs and can’t find one. 

Others are underemployed and are just barely making it. 

People I know are going hungry so their children can have their needs filled.

Families are losing their homes because they can’t afford the rent any more. 

With turmoil going on in the world people are becoming desperate; even the people of God. 

What can we do when our backs are against the wall, when we are in desperate situations and we have nowhere to turn and we are in serious trouble?

What can we do? 

Can we call on God?

Can we depend on God? 

Can we trust in God?

Lauren Daigle (song reference!) has recently become one of my favorite artists, because her words hit so close to home:

When You don't move the mountains I'm needing You to move
When You don't part the waters I wish I could walk through
When You don't give the answers as I cry out to You
I will trust, I will trust, I will trust in You!

God desires that we depend on Him and that we seek His help. 

Think of a human father: what good father would not want his children to turn to him when they need help? 

Naturally, a father loves it when his children come to him to seek help. 

There is something special about having someone there for you. 

I guess the point I am trying to get across here is that God is this true source that we can depend on.

God truly loves those that are His. 

He loves you! 

Listen to what God says for those who are in desperate situations and what He promises when they call upon Him.

and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.

Psalm 50:15

Citizenship

Our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ.

—Philippians 3:20

No matter what your passport says, if you are a Christ follower, there is no earthly country that can hold you.

No borders that can claim you and no flag that flies above you but Jesus and the Kingdom of Heaven.

You have more in common with the believing aboriginal tribesman of Indonesia, the Christian refugee in Africa, the Bedouin brother in Egypt, the Spirit-filled Brazilian housewife, the high rise business person in Hong Kong who bows to pray in Jesus name, than you do your next door neighbors if they don't know Christ as Lord and Savior.

I am a citizen of God.

Seek Him

For the LORD is righteous, He loves justice; upright men will see His face.

Can you think of any greater promise for those who seek to be righteous and just?

We will see God face to face!

Incredible.

What a blessing!

What a future!

What an incredible Father!

So let's seek our Abba Father, the LORD God, with all heart and soul and mind and strength until that day that we get to see Him as He is.

We will be face-to-face with God in all His glory.

Focus, trust and hope

Light shines on the godly, and joy on those whose hearts are right. May all who are godly rejoice in the Lord and praise his holy name!

It has been a week, and I really thought that our nation would be ready to move on after the election, but it that does not seem to be the case.

I have seen lasting friendships and family ties utterly destroyed in the past few weeks.

This year’s election has been filled with fear and anxiety - - for everyone.

We MUST remember that our focus and trust is not in political systems, but we rejoice in the LORD, who shines light and joy into our heart.

Remember the rule and reign of God today and every day and place your hope in the LORD and not the people that were voted into office.

This is how to access peace in the midst of unsettling times.

Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.

I know that sometimes I waver in my faith and sometimes I question God and His plan.

And that is ok.

Look at the people in the Bible - their faith wasn't always perfect, their trust wasn't always mature.

But, they stayed at it; they believed and acted with a relentless assurance that somehow, some way, God would act and deliver.

I need that kind of faith, I am sure that you do as well.

So when the going gets tough, let's stay at it with that kind of faith too!

Veteran's Day

Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus. No one serving as a soldier gets entangled in civilian affairs, but rather tries to please his commanding officer.

– 2 Timothy 2:3-4

Today is Veteran’s Day.

To the men and women in the military, we honor your sacrifice and your service!

We honor our Veterans, those who have fallen, those who have served and those who continue to fight for our rights and freedoms around the globe.

We remember the sacrifice that men and women have given for their country.

In the same way, God calls us to live in such a way that pleases our Great Commander.

Let this holiday remind all of us that you and I are not called to live an “ordinary” life.

There are great adventures that await those who are willing to endure hardship, and therefore, qualify for the prize.

I am wearing a “My Son Defends Freedom in the US Army” shirt today.

I could not be more proud of the soldier that he has become.

I hope that I can do something nice for a veteran today.

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, made by human hands. They have mouths, but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see. They have ears, but cannot hear, nor is there breath in their mouths. Those who make them will be like them, and so will all who trust in them.

We may not have idols that we see in our daily lives, but idols are all around us.

We make idols of career, family, comfort, and many other things that are as man-made as the ancient ones of silver and gold.

These modern idols shape us into their image just as much as the ancient ones did.

Do you trust in money?

Watch how it affects you when money is at stake.

Do you trust in status?

Don’t be surprised if you crumble when a promotion doesn’t come through.

God made us for Himself, and turning to any other god is a tragedy in the making.

Live wise

Be very careful, then, how you live—not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is.

– Ephesians 5:15-17

This is a great vision for time management.

Is there something that you have always wanted to do, see, own, but had to wait because of time, money or responsibilities?

I remember being told when I learned that I was pregnant (so many years ago!) that I should have waited until we could afford to have a child.

I remember when we moved here, being told that we should not have moved because it was too expensive.

But if I would have waited to have children, I would not be a proud mom of three awesome kids.

If I would not have moved, I would have missed out on meeting some incredible people and making my life so much better.

Expect opportunities to happen, and order your life in such a way that you are prepared for those opportunities WHEN they happen.

Take a chance on things that you would normally shy away from, you might be pleasantly surprised with the results.

It would be a shame to have doors opening to you without being prepared to walk through them.
