Someone may say
to you, “Let’s ask the mediums and those who consult the spirits of the dead.
With their whisperings and mutterings, they will tell us what to do.” But
shouldn’t people ask God for guidance? Should the living seek guidance from the
dead?
- Isaiah 8:19 (NLT)

In 1984, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) deregulated advertising time, opening the door to a new era of “answers for sale.” Suddenly, you could call a number and—for just $1.99 per minute—a live psychic would tell you everything you wanted to know. They’d help you “connect” with loved ones, predict your future, even offer you winning lottery numbers (for an additional charge, of course).
Fast-forward forty years. Last week, I had the TV on in the background while working on a craft project, and to my utter amazement—those psychic hotlines still exist!
For real though, why are we still falling for this old bag of tricks?
Isaiah’s words remind us that this isn’t new. People have always been tempted to look everywhere except God for answers—mediums, horoscopes, fortune tellers, social media “readings,” even self-help trends that sound spiritual but miss the truth of Scripture entirely.
But Isaiah’s question cuts right to the heart of it: “Shouldn’t people ask God for guidance?”
We don’t need to chase after voices that promise clarity or control. We serve a living God who still speaks, still leads, and still guides His people today. He may not answer instantly or in the way we expect, but His wisdom is pure, trustworthy, and full of peace.
The enemy loves to distract us with counterfeit comfort. But God invites us into something real—relationship, not ritual. When confusion hits or the future feels foggy, the question isn’t “Who can tell me what’s next?” It’s “Lord, what are You teaching me right now?”
When you seek Him first, you’ll never need a hotline to find hope.
