One of my favorite weekends of the year is almost here—the
annual quilt auction at Ingham Okoboji Bible Camp.
Over the years, it has become much more than a fundraiser. It's a family tradition. We spend the weekend at camp enjoying a Scandinavian dinner, listening to an incredible lakeside piano concert, cheering on runners in the 5K, bidding on beautiful handmade quilts, and most importantly, laughing with family and friends who have become family over the years. Some of my favorite memories have been made there.
For a long time, we built our vacation around that weekend. We'd spend a few days in Iowa, then head to Sturgis for the motorcycle rally before making our way to my husband's hometown for a week of relaxing before heading back home.
Every year looked a little different. Some years we rode our motorcycles the entire trip. Some years—yes, I'll admit it—we hauled our Harleys on a trailer. (I know... the shame!) A few years we even took the RV and made a whole new adventure out of it. The destination stayed the same, but the journey changed.
The last couple of years, though, we haven't been able to make the Sturgis trip or spend that extra week in Iowa. If I'm honest, that makes me a little sad.
It's easy to focus on what isn't happening anymore instead of appreciating what still is. But as I've thought about it, I've realized something important.
I may only see the part of the journey that's changed. God sees the entire road.
Maybe there are reasons I don't understand yet. Maybe He's protecting us from something we'll never know about. Maybe He's opening the door to a new tradition or a different adventure that we haven't discovered yet.
Romans 8:28 doesn't promise that everything will go according to my plans.
It promises that God is working through all things.
The joyful seasons, the disappointing seasons, the detours, the changes we never would have chosen.
Looking back over my life, I can see so many moments that didn't make sense at the time. If I had judged God's faithfulness by a single season, I would have missed the incredible story He was writing over the years. I'm thankful that God isn't just interested in one destination. He's interested in the whole journey.
And somehow, every mile—whether it's on a motorcycle, in an RV, or simply walking by faith—becomes part of the beautiful story He's creating.
